Garlic &
Herb Bagel

DoseofNutrition.jpg
There's nothing like starting your day off with a cup of tea and a toasted bagel paired with your favorite cream cheese. As much as I love grabbing a ready-made bagel from a local shop or grocery store, they can get quite pricey and many options can lack nutrients like fiber or protein.  You'll be surprised to know that homemade bagels can be just as delicious, cheaper and super easy to make.

My Garlic and Herb Bagel recipe is made with basic pantry ingredients and takes under 30 minutes to make. For this recipe, I used whole wheat flour since it provides fiber and added Greek yogurt for a protein boost.  I flavored these bagels with dried parsley and garlic powder and sprinkled over sesame seeds on the outer layer for some texture.  The are chewy on the inside and perfectly crisp on the outside. A few out of the many ways you can enjoy these bagels include:
  • Topped with an egg and sliced avocado
  • Tuna or chicken salad bagel sandwich
  • Paired with any spread of choice- cream cheese, hummus, guac, Tzatziki sauce
  • Mediterranean Veggie bagel sandwich

Servings: 4 bagels
Prep Time: 5 minutes
Cook Time: About 25 minutes
Total Time: About 30 minutes
Author: Huma Naz
Ingredients:
  • 1 cup whole wheat flour
  • 1 cup plain nonfat Greek yogurt
  • 1 tbsp. garlic powder
  • 1 tbsp. parsley
  • 1/4 tsp. salt
  • 1 1/2 tsp. baking soda
  • 1 whisked egg- used for egg wash
  • 1 tbsp. sesame seeds
Directions:
  1. Preheat the oven to 420°F  and line a donut or regular baking sheet with parchment paper.
  2. In 1 bowl, mix together the dry ingredients(all except sesame seeds): whole wheat flour, garlic powder, dried parsley, baking soda, salt. Then, add in the greek yogurt and mix with a utensil until a dough ball is formed.
  3. Transfer the dough to a lightly floured surface and knead the dough for 1 minute. Slice the dough into 4 almost equal parts. Lightly flour your hands and roll each section into about 8" strips and connect/pinch together the ends forming a bagel shape.
  4. Transfer the bagels onto the sheet pan and lightly brush each bagel with egg wash.  Sprinkle over sesame seeds and some extra parsley flakes. Bake for about 25 minutes or until the bagel is golden brown.
  5. Once they are done, let them cool for about 20 minutes before serving.
Recipe Notes:
  • You can store the donuts in room temperature for 1-2 days in an airtight container or in the freezer for 2-3 months in a sealed baggie. Reheat in the toaster or microwave.
